Scott Sutton - Sutton Reining Horses
Growing up in the Central West of NSW, Scott Sutton was never too far away from horses.
A few years were spent just mucking about with bush horses but at age sixteen, things were about to change. Some friends that owned Paint Horses lent one of there horses out and when it was returned to them it was a totally different horse. So they asked Scott if he could ride the horse for awhile. He took the horse home and worked with it for a couple of weeks, when Scott returned the horse to them at a show the owners were totally surprised! They were able to lope the horse around without any of its previous problems, incredibly, they also showed the horse that day. The friends asked Scott where he had learned to train a horse like he did? With no formal training, Scott soon realised he possessed a natural ability to work with horses.
Scott's interest in the Western World was sparked when he had the opportunity to ride an old Ian Francis horse, Dangars Kolider Drift. After attending several performance shows and placing in every event, Scott soon competed on Dangars Koliders Drift at a NSW Reining Show in which he won his first reingning competion.
Judging this show was top American Reiner, Dell Hendricks. After the show Scott participated in a the clinic run by Dell Hendricks and to his surprise Dell invited him back to the USA. Scott trained under Dell for 3 months at Rancho Osa Rio, Arizona and says it is the best learning curve he could have ever experienced. It was at Rancho Osa Rio where Scott says his passion for Reining was ignited.
Scott came back to Australia full of ideas and started traing horses after working 8 hours a day. In 2000 Scott went back to the USA and based himself in Corning, 1.5hrs from San Francisco. For 9 months Scott worked with an AQHA Trainer and was given the chance to ride reiners, western pleasure horses, hunters, rope and cow horses. On arrival back from the USA the Queensland Reigning Horse Associationasked him to do a clinicin QLD and it was from here that Scott decided to make the move from NSW to QLD and start traing horses full time.
Scott's wife Judy, who Scott met through a mutual friend and have been married 6 years now, has also done extremly well in the horse world. For 7 years Judy had competed in Barrel Racing and Steer Undecorating with the National Rpdeo Association. Judy was crowned Rodeo Queen of Autralia in 1999-2000 and went to the USA to represent Australia. At the same time was crowned National Rodeo Association Queen and in 1997 Judy was also crowned Warwick Rodeo Queen. Scott and Judy now base themselves on their 20 acre property at Wamuran, QLD.
Holding his AQHA Judges Certificate, Scott says he has travelled to every state in Australia (except TAS) to judge. He thoroughly enjoys running clinics so he can pass on the knowledge he has learn't over the years to riders of all levels.
On plans for the future, Scott says he would like to keep the momentum going! He has established himself in the last 12 months as a more open competitor in the reigning arena and he would like to dedicate more time to the open horses. In saying all that... Scott will not lose sight of helping the non pro's and keep the non pro program going that he has put together over the last few years.
